Since the end of the 17th century, the process of pitching stumps into the ground to set up a game of cricket has been called “pitching the stumps”. By the late 1800s, people started using “pitch” as a noun to describe a playing area. By 1900, pitch was used specifically for a football (or soccer) playing area. Pitch = playing area. In England, the term “field” usually refers to an open space, as in a pasture or grassy area, not a playing area.
Even more interesting was this tidbit I found in my Google travels about the origins of soccer itself and the early ‘pitches’. While British football was created as a war game in the 8th Century, the Japanese were playing a form of football called Kemari around 1004 B.C. on fields of play:
Since the beginning of football there have always been goalposts, but the crossbar was not invented until 1875, before which a string between the goalposts was used. A goal is scored when the ball crosses the goal line between the goal-posts and beneath the crossbar, even if a defending player last touched the ball before it crossed the goal line (see own goal ).
A Desso Grassmaster pitch, which can now be found in most of the country’s stadiums such as Anfield, White Hart Lane and Wembley, was first laid in the home of Huddersfield Town Football Club and Huddersfield Giants Rugby League Club in 1996. The presence of both a football team and a rugby club using the pitch means that it is one of the busiest in the country, but it coped admirably with such regular usage and didn’t need to be re-laid until 2011.

Football in its current form arose in England in the middle of the 19th century. But alternative versions of the game existed much earlier and are a part of the football history.

The goal area is a rectangular zone centered on the goal starting 18’ | 5.5 m out from both goalposts and extending 18’ | 5.5 m into the pitch.
Association football, more commonly known as simply football or soccer, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of 11 players. It is played by approximately 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a ...
Some suggest that the history of soccer dates back as far as 2500 B.C. During this time, the Greeks, Egyptians, and Chinese all appear to have partaken in games involving a ball and feet. Most of these games included the use of hands, feet, and even sticks to control a ball.
